The Louvre at the Heart of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games: Exhibitions, Events, and Dining

The Louvre and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

The Louvre Museum and the Olympic and Paralympic Games share a universal vocation. For the Paris 2024 Games, the Louvre and Tuileries domain will be at the heart of the festivities. From the Olympic flame relay on July 14th to cycling and marathon events, many key moments will take place at the Louvre. A special exhibition will explore the origins of the Olympic Games through the museum’s Greek antiquities collections, offering a unique cultural depth to this sporting event.

Special Exhibition: The Origins of the Olympic Games

Exhibition Overview

Visitors can discover exceptional pieces, such as the Bréal Cup, a historical trophy from the first modern marathon race, lent by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. This exhibition highlights the cultural and historical heritage of the Games, emphasizing the deep connections between art and sport.

Key Artifacts

Among the key artifacts, the Bréal Cup stands out for its historical significance. Visitors will also have the opportunity to admire a collection of sculptures and art objects from ancient Greece, providing insight into the mythical and historical origins of the Olympic Games.

Viewing the Olympic Cauldron Up Close at the Tuileries Garden

Cauldron Description

The Olympic cauldron for the Paris 2024 Games is a spectacular artwork designed by French designer Mathieu Lehanneur. This unique cauldron, majestically floating over 60 meters above the ground, illuminates from sunset until 2 a.m., creating an enchanting vision visible throughout Paris.

Ecological Design and Technology

Far from a traditional flame, the Olympic cauldron uses innovative and eco-friendly technology, supported by EDF. It is equipped with 40 LED projectors and 200 high-pressure misting nozzles that create the illusion of a flickering flame without producing carbon. This is the first time an Olympic flame has used an entirely electric solution.

Access and Viewing

During the day, the cauldron is installed in the Tuileries Garden, opposite the Louvre. Visitors can register for free on the official website, securing a 15-minute slot to admire this technological and design marvel up close. Each day, up to 10,000 people can approach the cauldron.

A Permanent Cauldron?

The beauty and innovation of this cauldron have sparked discussions about its conservation after the Games. Mathieu Lehanneur has proposed keeping the cauldron permanently floating above the Tuileries Garden, transforming this space into an emblematic site perpetuating the Olympic spirit in the heart of Paris. This ambitious idea reflects the desire to create a lasting and inspiring legacy for future generations.

Night and Day Experience

At night, the cauldron shines like a beacon in the Parisian sky, capturing the imagination and wonder of spectators. During the day, it becomes a “sun within reach,” offering an interactive and immersive experience. This duality between nocturnal majesty and daytime accessibility makes it a perfect symbol of French innovation and hospitality, embodying the spirit of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
